I feel your pain though, I've had to spend a long time in a couple of areas with speeds lower than that, and it's not fun at all. I hope you at least have steady connection; speeds like that aren't so bad if you've got the full speed all the time. Whenever I'm somewhere with a crap connection, it's generally all over the place, never the same reading twice.

Re: DOCSIS 3: So This is How Modems Should Work

I hate you... hate hate HATE !!! If all you're looking for is a nice photostream, then there are actual photoblogs available along with microblogs that fit the bill. Some go as far as to offer password protection, so that only those to whom you grant access may view your blog.

Great examples of microblogs are Posterous and Tumblr, both of which offer privacy on demand, without hassle. Dedicated photoblogs are useful, but not multi-purpose. Good examples of these would be a simple Flickr account, or a service such as Skitch or Picasa. Like I said, photoblogs don't offer many uses other than simple picture sharing, but they're very useful when it comes to that one purpose. They also tend to offer fairly good privacy options since they're based on the sensitive nature of family photos and such.

Here's URL's to the sites or services I mentioned:
http://posterous.com
http://tumblr.com
http://skitch.com
http://picasa.google.com

As for Facebook Lite; yes, it's basically just the same thing as regular Facebook, but without the clutter showing on the main page. It's just a simpler look and feel, but all the same guts are there. If you're interested in trying that out, just go to http://lite.facebook.com and see if you like it.

Re: Google Chrome for Mac: Stable Enough for Me.

Actually it's available for Mac too, I still use it, and can't actually decide whether I prefer it or Chrome, since they're still being developed side-by-side. I have email to communicate for real. I feel some of the silly stuff is fun and some of it is stupid and in my way. Is it not possible to set it up my way? I may just drop the whole thing. Its a worry who may say what and It seems just as childish as My-space. I thought it would be more adult. Any suggestions that would allow my friends to still see my pics and say hi even if I am not on face book? Otherwise I feel I can not just go in and look at my kids pics in peace. Maybe there is a setting. It never works right anyway most of the time. And whats face book lite? less junk? how do you get it? do I want it or will it be more BS? Help I feel the same way about my once simple Hotmail now gone live!

Valorie

Re: Facebook Overdose is Imminent.

I'm really happy for you, and imma let you finish, but Twitter is the greatest social networking platform of all time.

Re: Celebrity Tweeting Done Right: Danny DeVito

Via this site, you will learn the invaluable absurdity of memes limited to 140 characters ;)

Re: Google Chrome for Mac: Stable Enough for Me.

Definitely Tom. This is a good, I've been using Chrome for Linux exclusively for over a month and the only complaint I have is poor Flash integration, other than that, it is my browser of choice. If it's just as good/better on a Mac, I will be dumping Safari and loading it when I get my Mac in a couple of weeks.

Re: SO GIBSON IT HURTS.

I think if something doesn't quite go FULL GIBSON, then qualifies as gibsonesque. STOP WHINING LIKE A LITTLE CHILD ABOUT IT.

I have heard that AT&T has terrible coverage in NYC and San Francisco. If you didn't check real coverage out BEFORE you bought an iPhone, YOU'RE AN IDIOT! Where I live, coverage by Sprint was horrible but coverage by AT&T is great. I have NO trouble with dropped calls or lack of coverage. I did the research and got something that works for me.

So stop behaving like little children and GROW UP. QUIT WHINING. "Boo hoo! My Apple action figure doesn't work with my Google toy. I'll smash them both then go into a corner and eat worms."

Just grow up and quit your whining.

Re: TechCrunch: Arrington’s Showing His Ignorance.

Although you may have shown he knows little about google voice, you haven't really deflated his argument for leaving at all (which was really a matter of principal rather than what you portray it as). You also haven't defended Apple's position. So what is the point of your article?

I don't think he will actually leave the iphone, mind you. If you read carefully he mentions how he is leaving, not that he has left. There is a big difference. It was quite a struggle for me to give mine up, but it just doesn't work in NYC. I tried leaving for other smart phones, but until the Pre came out, I preferred the bad network over the bad device.

Re: TechCrunch: Arrington’s Showing His Ignorance.

you are trying to be an attention whore by using Arrington.. something that Arrington did when he was your age ( in blog years )

Re: TechCrunch: Arrington’s Showing His Ignorance.

I second that. I've had AT&T, Sprint and Verizon all in Los Angeles. and AT&T was the absolute worst. I always had a land line with AT&T because my cell phone would never have reception at home... and I moved around to different parts of the city 3 or 4 times with AT&T... didn't work anywhere. Never had that problem with Verizon or Sprint. Verizon always worked, and Sprint occasionally gives me roaming problems.

AT&T sucks. It was the #1 reason I didn't get an iphone back then...and #1 reason I don't now.

Re: TechCrunch: Arrington’s Showing His Ignorance.

+1

Re: TechCrunch: Arrington’s Showing His Ignorance.

Matthew Rogers, you are full of crap lol. Have YOU even used Google Voice?

I'm a Google Voice and iPhone user. I can confirm first hand, Michael Arrington's complaints about Google Voice on the iPhone are legitimate.

Your two main bullet point arguments for why you think Arrington is wrong, are ridiculous.

1- You think it's not a big deal to tell all of your contacts you have a new number.
You must not have very many friends (let alone business cards in countless places across the country as I'm sure Michael Arrington has). And no, it is not acceptible to just have "2 phone numbers", keeping your old number is a fallback.

2- You believe that it's a viable option to open a web app every time you want to make an outgoing call.
Are you serious? Do you understand how long it takes to dial out with the web app? This is what you have to do:
1. Load google.com/voice in Safari (you will probably have this bookmarked)
2. Navigate page after page until you find the contact you want to call
3. Cick on the contact
4. Click on the right phone number (mobile/home/office etc)
5. Wait for Google Voice to call you
6. Accept the call

This is NOT an option for making all of your outgoing calls. I'd rather use the iPhone dialer and have my old phone number display to the recipient.

The choice between iPhone and Google Voice IS forced. I'm in the same boat as Arrington. I, too, will be switching to an Android phone as soon as possible.
